I gotta go with Kierkegaard's 'Life can only be understood backwards; but it must be lived forwards.' Great job, as always!

A philosopher's coat - I love it.

Wonderful and prescient post! This outline applies so well to wounds literal, cultural, emotional, metaphysical, etc. The stitch is not the same as the healing. And scars can denote a beautiful lesson.

Scars are some of the best storytellers, for sure. Been thinking about that a lot lately; grateful for this reflection.

Beautiful writing as always. And incisive. Speaking of incisive...the current wound runs deep and it's hard to see how it can ever be truly mended. In fact, the wound of the Cvil War was only temporarily cauterized and has still not ended. It continues to weep. I learned a lot from your piece, as always. 'With malice toward none and charity toward all' would be good political stitching material. It didn't work out all that well for Abe that April but, as always, he was aspirational -- as all of us should be now. But 'Good Intentions' may be all we can stitch for now.

Amen for aspiration - and good intentions for that matter. And thanks for reading!

As of yesterday, mine would be "hope springs eternal"!

Your words always speak to me. They touch my head ( I never fail to learn something new) and they touch my heart ( I never fail to feel). Thank you my beautiful daughter.

Wow...just wow! So much is said here in such beautifully crafted prose that doesn't alienate or point fingers. THIS is how we should ALL converse. Bless you for being a "mender". 💜

Beautiful reflection, friend. Our wound is indeed deep and we are indeed rich in distraction. At this point, my stitch would probably say, "No war but class war." I also love the Flannery quote, "You shall know the truth and the truth shall make you odd." Getting that tattooed on my body at some point.

Yes please - that Flannery coat screams to be embroidered in a coat 😂

you know the pace of the work is out of joint with the pace of our world... Loved this phrase, made me crumble. Thank you for putting this piece together. So much has been said in this essay 💔.
