Greetings, mes petites cacahuètes (this is, at present, the only thing I know how to say in French and have therefore been calling everything “my little peanut” since I learned it.)
Just a short check in with a few bits and bobs. A full post to come post-haste, probably about personal evolution and how strange it is to be all of your various selves at once. And also the overblown perils of quicksand. But until then…
I have finally built a website!
And there was much rejoicing (mostly by me!). I have finally compiled most of my published work in one handy dandy place. Is the headshot from a decade ago? Sure is. Will I get a new one soon? Hopefully? But I wasn’t gonna let the fact that I have a weird lack of professional-looking photos of myself slow down the works any longer. So give it a gander if you feel so inclined! And let me know if anything renders weird on your screen or if there are any fantastically embarrassing misspellings.
Publication Updates:
American Craft
I can’t begin to explain to y’all how much I’ve enjoyed writing for American Craft over the years. They were my first, real “grown up” publication and it has been nothing short of a delight to write for them over the last few years. I get to do what I love most: nerd out with craftspeople and then wax poetic while bragging about them. An absolute delight.
For the most recent issue, I had the privilege to profile Mo Walrath and her project Woven Thresholds; she weaves baskets that usher spirits into and out of this world, and her gorgeous, poetic sensibility made writing about her the dreamiest.
As soon as the piece is released online, I’ll add it to my website (did I mention I have a new website?) but if supporting American Craft is your jam, you can purchase the issue here or become a member and receive 4 issues a year.
The Bitter Southerner
Speaking of supporting amazing publications, if you don’t already subscribe to The Bitter Southerner for a whopping $5/month to get those super sexy, large-format print mags full of brilliant writers, thinkers, and musicians, I’m just saying you might want to consider it. You’ll get their amazing All Women issue if you subscribe soon. AND you just might happen to see a piece in the following issue about water witching and mystery and radio and the beauty of not always knowing everything by yours truly.
Some Housekeeping:
I adore the small community I’ve found here on
. Makers and foodies and space nerds and naturalists - it’s pretty much my favorite. And I have been immensely grateful to the folks who have financially supported my work even though I staunchly insist on avoiding a paywall (at least while I remain gainfully employed full-time). But between article writing, efforts at working toward a larger project, and the aforementioned day job, I haven’t been able to contribute here regularly enough to justify anyone paying me legal tender. So I’m going to suspend billing for the time being but will still be writing here pretty regularly. I hope in the future to offer a tailored experience around handcraft and writing that would have an associated subscription model. But until then, whoever wants to know the contents of my quirky little bird brain is welcome and the best way to show your support is share posts with folks you think might be interested. Rising tides lifting boats and such.
Ok! That’s it for now! It’s a gorgeous, breezy “false fall” Friday evening here, so I’m headed for the screen porch with a book and a Last Word.
More soon!
K
